Psalm 48:1-2: Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in His holy mountain. Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.






Timeline of Jerusalem:

Patriarchal Era

  • c. 2000 BC — Abraham’s Covenant God promises Abraham the land and his seed (Genesis 12:7).

  • c. 1900 BC — Melchizedek, King of Salem Melchizedek blesses Abraham with bread and wine; Salem = early Jerusalem (Genesis 14:18–20).

  • c. 1900 BC — Isaac on Mount Moriah Abraham offers Isaac; God provides a substitute (Genesis 22).

The Kingdom Period

  • c. 1000 BC — David Captures Jerusalem David takes the city from the Jebusites; makes it the capital of Israel (2 Samuel 5:7).

  • c. 970 BC — Solomon Builds the Temple Solomon dedicates the temple on Mount Moriah by sacrificing 120,000 Lambs (2 Chronicles 7:5).

Prophetic Era

  • c. 500–400 BC — Prophets Foretell the Messiah

    • Zechariah 9:9 — King enters Jerusalem on a donkey.

    • Daniel 9:26 — Messiah “cut off.”

    • Isaiah 53 — Suffering Servant bears the sins of many.

Time of Christ

  • c. AD 30 — Jesus in Jerusalem

    • Triumphal Entry (Matthew 21:5).

    • Crucifixion outside the city walls (Luke 23).

    • Burial in a nearby tomb (John 19).

    • Resurrection on the third day (Matthew 28).

    • Ascension from the Mount of Olives (Acts 1:9–12).

  • c. AD 30 — Pentecost Gospel preached beginning at Jerusalem (Luke 24:47; Acts 2).

Future Events (Prophetic Timeline)

  • The Antichrist Abomination of Desolation set up in the temple (Matthew 24:15; 2 Thessalonians 2:3–4).

  • The Nations Gather Global armies assemble against Jerusalem at Armageddon (Zechariah 14:2; Revelation 16:13–16).

  • The Second Coming of Christ Jesus returns; His feet stand on the Mount of Olives (Zechariah 14:4).

  • The Millennial Reign (1,000 years) Christ rules the nations from Jerusalem in peace and justice (Revelation 20:4; Isaiah 2:2–3).

  • The Eternal State — The New Jerusalem A heavenly city descends; God dwells with His people forever (Revelation 21–22).
